Many have however, criticized the director for adding unessential story lines which made the movie 3 hours and 20 minutes long. I thoroughly enjoyed the movie and felt there was never a dull moment. Rehman is lilting and the dance choreography is stunning. The sets, jewelry and the period costumes take you back in time to that glorious period in history. On a recent trip to India I had visited the Agra fort and never knew it was so huge and magnificent until I saw this movie. There are awe inspiring aerial shots of the magnificent forts of India. There are magnificent battle sequences that seem like they are from epic Hollywood movies such as “Troy” rather than in a Bollywood movie. The movie starts from the time when Akbar was just 13 years old and was suddenly entrusted the responsibility of the entire mughal empire. The movie beautifully weaves the story of an hindu princess and her life as the wife of mughal Emperor Akbar. Jodhaa is resentful of her father for fixing her alliance with a muslim emperor for political gains. Jodhaa’s father, King Bharmal of Amer seeks the alliance with the mughul emperor to protect his subjects from the wrath of the emperor’s powerful army in his quest to become ruler of India. The story revolves around a rajput princess named Jodhaa bai and her marriage of alliance to Akbar, a muslim emperor. The movie takes you back 450 years in history to the time of Emperor Akbar. The cinematography and story telling in the movie are absolutely spell binding. Starring Aishwarya Rai and Hrithik Roshan, the movie is an absolute must see.

Aishwarya has never looked more opulent, royal and gorgeous.Īlthough Deepika in both of SLB’s movies was fantastic as well, there is no denying that the outfits were an added layer of drama to the storyline, unlike JA where it seemed to seamlessly fit into the narrative.Last night I saw “Jodhaa Akbar”, an epic movie from renowned director Ashutosh Gowarikar. The outfits were apt not only apt for audiences watching in 2008, it fits well for 2020 as well and that relatability is what makes the movie a winner. There is precision and perfection with the styling, despite it having released over 12 years ago. Take a look at some of the stills from the film below and tell us you don’t feel the same?Ĭredit: Pinterest + The Result The movie looked like a goddamn poster for royal wedding looks! Costume designers Rimple and Harpreet Narula, brought to life the complex storyline and made sure audiences were visually stunned as well. Deepika is seen in colour-blocked lehengas with similar satladas and moti haars as in Jodhaa Akbar. Perform Sati, but make it fashion apparently. The second of SLB’s historical dramas was much brighter and more colourful than the last one despite the tragic ending. For lust purposes, it comes second.Ĭredit: Pinterest + YouTube/ETimes c) Padmaavat In terms of styling, that is a great achievement. The main focus is the storyline, the clothes become secondary. The songs have heavy styling with more embellished pieces, but the overall tone throughout the film is very muted.

The styling for the film was done in a more contemporary way with breezy multi-layered cotton kurtas, statement salwar sets and jewellery. With Bajirao Mastani, there was clarity on the fact that it was a period drama. We have to discount Goliyon Ki Rasleela Ram Leela because it was based in current-day Rajasthan although we have no clue why everyone was so regressive. There has to be good communication with the director to ensure that each piece that is seen on-screen fits the bigger picture-and if you’ve achieved that, you can be rest-assured your film will be a success. All of his kurtas, vests, jewellery, turbans, fighting gear was coordinated and in-sync with the narrative. Some of the looks were so exquisite, we wondered if anyone except Aish could pull it off-like the ones listed below.Įven Hrithik’s royal look was very well-thought out. Ornate saat ladas, rani haars, chokers that played up every lehenga worn by Aishwarya. The film incorporates the right jewellery, the correct clothes and opulence you’d expect in a Mughal court. The earliest of the lot, this movie had impeccable costumes. So we decided to assess which movie did the best job! a) Jodhaa Akbar Remember how viral that one Starbucks cup went from Game of Thrones ? Something along those lines is relevant here as well. Getting the costumes right for a film that has historical significance is extremely crucial-one mistake and the whole film can stick out like a sore thumb. The styling of all 3 films is equally noteworthy. Ashutosh Gowariker gave us Jodhaa Akbar back in 2008 which kick-started our love affair with gorgeous period dramas followed by SLB’s Bajirao Mastani and Padmaavat. In recent years, with Sanjay Leela Bhansali being a major proponent, Bollywood has blessed us with a few stunning period dramas.
